Quitting smoking is hard, this is not in question. There are a number of methods available that will assist you in this task, but all they can do is assist. Unfortunately the majority of the work is going to have to be done by you. The only method that actually works is good old fashion will power. Nobody wants to hear this, but it is true. The patch, gum, zyban, all these can help, but without will power, all is hopeless. To be honest a healthy diet and regular exercise is by far the greatest aid. Don’t replace an addictive chemical with an addictive chemical, this is not the way really. So what we have to do is beef up our will power and our motivation if we are to succeed. How we do this is to attach massive pain to smoking, and great pleasure or benefit to quitting.

We all know the dangers of cigarettes. What we need to do though is really intensify those dangers in our mind. Our nature is to preserve life, our life. If we can convince ourselves that we are going to die if we don’t quit, our nature will take over and we will succeed.

Study the negative effects of tobacco, look at pictures of smoker's lung, visit the cancer ward at your local hospital, become obsessed. Do not be in denial. Learn and fully understand this is going to be your fate also if you do not stop. Don’t let things get to the point where it is to late.

We must remove all excuses not to quit. They are irrelevant. Your mind and your body are going to do everything in their power to keep you smoking. Do not listen to them, you must override them with your will power and remove all excuses.

So here’s your task on creating pain. Learn and understand fully the fact that tobacco use results in death, probably a painful death, and if not death a very reduced quality of life in you mid and later years. If you prefer to avoid these facts and remain in denial, or you are still looking for a pain free way out, sadly you're not ready to quit yet.

On the other side of the coin, study the benefits of quitting. Create pleasure in your mind from it. Bask in the benefits. If you can attach enough pain, or even better death to smoking, and you can attach great pleasure and benefit to quitting, then you are well on your way. Success is likely.

This is our best strategy. Understanding that our nature is to move away from pain and towards pleasure. If we can create enough of both, then we will have created enough, drive, determination and motivation to succeed. Our subconscious will take over and guide the whole process.

It is still going to be difficult and painful, but you will succeed if you do this.
